Trust for the National Mall Launches Volunteer Docent Program

Trust for the National Mall Launches Volunteer Docent Program

Trust for the National Mall

The Trust for the National Mall is recruiting the inaugural class of National Mall Docents as part of the National Park Service’s Volunteers in the Parks (VIP) program. National Mall Docents will enhance the experience of the 25 million annual visitors to the country’s favorite national park by giving interactive educational tours, engaging visitors, and assisting the public with general inquiries, information, and directions.

Volunteers will have the opportunity to work directly with National Park Service (NPS) personnel and to develop their public speaking skills by interacting with visitors from all over the world. They will receive training on National Mall history, the Trust for the National Mall, tour management, National Mall attractions, and local flora and fauna. Volunteers will walk the National Mall in pairs speaking with visitors and locals alike. Docents will showcase the park by connecting visitors to the National Mall’s rich history, directing them to current events, discussing future plans and encouraging people to actively support the National Mall.

The Trust for the National Mall is looking for volunteers who are at least 21 years of age, available for a minimum of two days per month in whole or half-day increments, and interested in a long-term commitment. Applicants should have teaching, docent, or public speaking experience and an interest in or knowledge of American history and Washington, DC.
