Trust for the National Mall

The Trust for the National Mall announced today the members of the National Mall Design Competition Jury.  The Jury of eight esteemed experts represents fields as diverse as architecture, landscape architecture, community activism, historic preservation, graphic design and sustainable land use. This morning, they begin three days of deliberations to select the lead designers who will be invited to participate in Stage II of the Competition.

 
The names of the entrants selected by the Jury to advance to Stage II will be posted on the Competition’s website, nationalmalldesign.org at 9 am on October 26.
 
“Our goal was to recruit a Jury of renowned design experts across a broad range of disciplines to help us select the most beautiful, useful and respectful designs for the National Mall,” said Caroline Cunningham, President of the Trust for the National Mall. “The esteemed group we have convened today accomplishes that goal and we are honored to have them stewarding the National Mall Design Competition.”

“In Stage I, the Jury will evaluate lead designers based on past design performance, philosophy, design intent, thoughtfulness, creativity and overall resume,” said Donald J. Stastny FAIA FAICP FCIP, the Competition Manager.  “The Jurors’ professional expertise and diverse perspectives will be valuable assets in the selection process.”
 
The Jury will meet over three days to select the lead designers who they recommend be invited to participate in Stage II. That recommendation will be made to the Steering Committee, which will confirm that the designers met all of the requirements as stated in the Competition Manual and that there were no conflicts of interest in the Jury process.
 
Since its launch on September 8, more than 1,200 designers and design teams from ten countries and 30 states have registered for the National Mall Design Competition.  Fifty-eight eligible lead designers made submissions for Stage I.
