Status of reflecting pool construction

If you've been down on the National Mall lately you may have noticed a big eye sore. The Reflecting Pool is undergoing a major renovation and it's not a pretty sight. But exactly what is being done and when will the work be done?
One of those iconic views that visitors to Washington DC have on their must-see list, after climbing the stairs to the Lincoln Memorial, and saying a quick hello to Abe, is to look out.
They turn around for that famous vista out toward the Washington Monument - The Reflecting Pool.
It’s the location of so many gatherings, marches or concerts over the years. And even a spot that people know from the movies.
But instead of a photo op, the current view is no reflection -- no water -- instead, a construction zone.
"The National Park Service is in the process of renovating, restoring, reconfiguring the reflecting pool between the Lincoln Memorial and World War Two Memorial."
It's a 2-and-a-half year, 30-million dollar plus project. The main goal of the upgrade is to install a filtration system, with water piped in from the tidal basin. Not sitting stagnant with debris and bird droppings in the summer heat and humidity.
Bill Line with the National Park Service says, "The reflecting pool's footprint, the original footprint, will be exactly same. What will change, what we did not have before, was any recirculating, filtration system. What we had before was essentially a large bathtub."
Others complain that it has put a crimp in their Washington DC sightseeing. Reflecting pool photos these days are unique, scenes people won't see again in a lifetime.
Bill Line says, "The new reflecting pool, when finished, will last hopefully another 80 years or more -- well after we're all gone"
Completion expected in Spring of 2012.
