Reflecting Pool on the National Mall Under Renovation

WASHINGTON - The National Mall will look a little different for this year's July 4th celebrations. That's because one of Washington’s iconic sites, the Reflecting Pool has been reduced to a pile of dirt. But it's just temporary while it undergoes renovation.
Bill Line is with the National Park Service. He says after all those years cracks the pool developed cracks.
The bottom of the reflecting pool is what was deteriorating. There were numerous leaks and nasty smells from stagnant water.
Especially in hot humid July and August weather in Washington, there was an odor that came about.
That'll change thanks to 31 million dollars of stimulus money.
They'll replace the leaking bottom and rest the new base on these pylons. They’ll lay underground pipes and pump water from the nearby tidal basin. And there'll be an underground filtration system.
The crowds will be moving too along a new flagstone path.
