National Book Festival 2011 announces list of participating authors

The Washington Examiner

The National Book Festival held annually in Washington, D.C. announced on Tuesday its list of participating authors for the event. Organized by the Library of Congress with honorary co-chairs President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama, this year the festival will run over two days on the weekend of September 24 and 25, bringing over 100 authors to the nation's capital.

Held on the National Mall, the festival brings authors to speak, read, answer readers' questions, and sign books in temporary pavilions set up around the mall. The event, now in its 11th year, is intended to encourage reading and the discussion of ideas among the nation's citizens.

The extra time this year will allow people to hear visiting authors speak for longer periods, ask more questions, and have more time to get to the next session they wish to attend.

Authors on the schedule are presented in categories relating to the genre of the books they write.  Pavilions are set up for the categories.  For 2011, the categories are:  Children; Teens; Contemporary Life; Fiction & Mystery; History & Biography; Poetry & Prose; Graphic Novels; State Poets Laureate; the Cutting Edge; and a Family Storytelling Stage.

Authors appearing include Tomie dePaola, William Joyce, and Julianne Moore in the Children pavilion and Katherine Paterson, Susan Cooper, Brian Selznick, Gary Schmidt, Kadir Nelson, and Fredrick and Patricia McKissack in the Teen tent.

In Fiction & Mystery, the authors include:  Toni Morrison, Sherman Alexie, Russell Banks, Terry McMillan, and Gregory Maquire. In Poetry & Prose, readers will have the opportunity to meet Rita Dove, Garrison Keillor, Dave Eggers, Mary Gordon, and Linda Pastan, among others.
