Marion Weiss and Michael Manfredi are the recipients of the 2013 URBAN EDGE AWARD given by the School of Architecture and Urban Planning at the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee. This biennial award honors an internationally recognized designer or firm whose work brings innovative thinking and effective strategies to transform the realm of urban design.
As recipients the award, Marion Weiss and Michael Manfredi will curate the Urban Edge Symposium "Evolutionary Infrastructure" at the UWM School of Architecture and Urban Planning in April 2013. The symposium will include a multidisciplinary panel of innovators in the fields of architecture, infrastructure, art, landscape, ecology, and urban design and a public keynote lecture delivered by Marion Weiss and Michael Manfredi. The UWM School of Architecture and Urban Planning introduced the biennial Urban Edge Award in 2006 to recognize excellence in urban design and the ability of individuals to create major, positive change within the public realm.
WEISS/MANFREDI Architecture/Landscape/Urbanism is a multidisciplinary design practice based in New York City. Founded by Marion Weiss and Michael Manfredi, the firm is known for the dynamic integration of architecture, art, infrastructure, and landscape design. WEISS/MANFREDI recently won the international competition to redesign the Washington Monument Grounds at the Sylvan Theater. The firm’s projects, including the Seattle Art Museum’s Olympic Sculpture Park, the Brooklyn Botanic Garden Visitor Center, and the Women’s Memorial at Arlington National Cemetery, exemplify the potential of architecture to transform public space. The firm has won numerous awards, including the Academy Award for Architecture from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and the International VR Green Prize for Urban Design. They have also been named one of North America's "Emerging Voices" by the Architectural League of New York, and received the New York City AIA Gold Medal of Honor. Weiss and Manfredi have taught design studios at Yale University, Princeton University, and Harvard University. Michael Manfredi has been the Gensler Visiting Professor at Cornell University and Marion Weiss is the Graham Chair Professor of Architecture at the University of Pennsylvania.
