Private-equity billionaire David Rubenstein has donated $7.5-million to repair cracks in the Washington Monument that have kept the landmark closed to the public since last summer’s East Coast earthquake, says the Associated Press.

The gift provides the matching funds required by Congress when it appropriated $7.5-million for repairs to the 555-foot obelisk. The National Park Service is aiming to begin repairs by the end of August and expects the work to take about a year.

Mr. Rubinstein has been a major donor to D.C. cultural landmarks such as the National Archives and the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.
