For the second straight year, Hofstra University sponsored an “Astronomy Night on the National Mall” in Washington, D.C. offering stargazing, exhibits, hands-on activities, multi-media presentations and the chance to meet some of the nation’s foremost astronomers.
The free public event was held Saturday night on the National Mall between 4th Street and 7th Street.
Astronomy Night on the National Mall is part of Hofstra’s astronomy public outreach program, run by Donald Lubowich, program coordinator.
“Bringing Hofstra’s program to the National Mall gives us a very special opportunity to encourage children to pursue their interest and science and promote public understanding of science,” Lubowich said. “Gazing at the rings of Saturn or the Moon’s craters and mountains captures the imagination, no matter how old you are.”
Over 10 telescopes were available for viewing the Moon, Saturn, its rings and moons, colorful double stars and star clusters.
Representatives from some of the nation’s foremost astronomical institutions were on hand, including the Space Telescope Science Institute, NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, National Optical Astronomy Observatory, National Capital Astronomers and others.
