The National Book Festival, an annual event created by First Lady Laura Bush in 2001, fills the National Mall with writers and literature lovers. This year the festival sees many new expansions to the traditional format, lasting an extra day and introducing three new genre pavilions: State Poets Laureate, The Cutting Edge, and Graphic Novels.

Some of this year’s big names include: Cassandra Clare, who writes the Mortal Instruments series, a popular collection of young adult books; Michael Cunningham, author of such books as The Hours, and The Home at the End of the World; Garrison Keiler, host and creator of popular Prairie Home Companion; Gregory Maguire, author of Wicked and other books that re-imagine popular narratives; Julianne Moore, renowned actress and recent children’s book author, writing stories featuring Freckleface Strawberry; and Nobel Prize winner Toni Morrison, author of books such as The Bluest Eye and Beloved. For a complete list of the authors in attendance visit the National Book Festival’s website.

This year’s festival promises to be bigger and better than ever. The Family Storytelling Stage is targeting young readers and their parents, while literary figures such as Toni Morrison provide a draw for the more academically minded.

The festival is free and open to the public and runs Saturday, September 24th from 10am to 5:30pm and Sunday, September 25th from 1pm to 5:30pm.
